Goff vs Wentz is the Same Old Story
By Benjy Kling
Since the quarterback needy LA Rams traded up for the first pick in this draft there have been many claims of which QB the team will take, California’s Jared Goff or North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz.
The decision between these two is just another chapter of the same old story, the constant debate of picking between NFL ready right away and higher potential down the road. And the NFL ready choice, in this case Jared Goff, always wins. It’s why Amari Cooper went before Kevin White last year, why Blake Bortles went before Teddy Bridgewater before that, and it’s why this year Goff will go first overall.
Carson Wentz has a higher ceiling, he has flashes of an ideal QB who has lots of room to improve, while Goff is playing at about the level he’ll max out at. But in terms of guaranteed play, Goff is a much cleaner finished product who can be plugged into the Rams’ system and compete day one while Wentz is going to have a learning curve before he can be the quarterback everyone wants him to be.
And for a team that gave up their first round pick next season and has put together a pretty decent team, needing a quarterback to put it all together, waiting for a player to develop to competing level isn’t an option. Taking risks in the first 5 picks hardly ever works out in the NFL especially first overall and any GM who values his job knows it.
The classic tale of ready now vs higher ceiling has and always will be a recurring theme of the NFL draft and the choice is invariably the same: order your Goff jerseys now Rams fans, they’re gonna sell fast.
