Cleveland Browns Looking to Deal No. 2 Overall
During draft season, NFL GMs and personnel people tell the truth less than your best lawyers do. So those of us that want to guess where guys get drafted have to be able to filter through the lies. You look at what the team did in free agency and traded, then put that up against what they’re saying.
We know now that there was just a big trade that got the Los Angeles Rams the No. 1 overall pick. Before the trade, the Tennessee Titans had it and it was widely assumed they would use it on OT Laremy Tunsil. That left the Cleveland Browns looking like the team that would pick the first quarterback in the draft.
According to Adam Schefter and Mike Silver, word out of Cleveland is that the Browns wanted Jared Goff early on. It also came out that if they weren’t able to get the guy they wanted, they would look to trade the pick. Hence, they signed Robert Griffin III just in case another team jumped over them and took a quarterback.
And shortly after the Rams made that jump to No. 1 overall, the Browns are looking to trade the pick. NFL Media’s Jeff Darlington reported Tuesday that Cleveland’s front office is working the phones ahead of the draft.
He told NFL HQ, “I spoke to at least one general manager in the top 10 who has received a call from Browns general manager Sashi Brown about trying to gauge interest on moving into that second-overall pick.”
The big hint that Goff is the quarterback the Browns wanted comes from the Rams. We all know that Goff is the most polished, pro ready quarterback in the draft and that Carson Wentz is an upside pick. The Rams traded up so they can win now and you don’t give up what they gave up to wait on upside.
Then you have the Philadelphia Eagles, who just want a quarterback and would take Goff or Wentz .
Head coach Doug Pederson told Philly.com, Pretty even in my opinion “From all the physical tools, both of them are extremely gifted there. Good arm strength, mobility. Obviously, Carson’s a little bigger, maybe a little better athlete right now. But there’s not much separating those two.”
There has been speculation about the Eagles trading up to No. 2 overall but that doesn’t look good. The Eagles have the No. 8 overall pick but don’t have a 2nd-round pick this year to put in there. No. 77. They also hold an additional third-rounder (No. 79), a fourth (No. 100), two fifths, a sixth and a pair of seventh-rounders.
The rest of the NFL seems to know how this is going to go because the San Diego Chargers have received just as much interest as the in their pick at No. 3 overall as the Browns have for their No. 2. from franchises picking inside and just outside the top 10 in the draft, sources aware of the situation told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.
Stockpiling picks is the way to go but it is possible for the Browns to change their minds and take Wentz.
Would you want to be a part of Cleveland’s front office if Wentz becomes a star?
