The 2016 NFL Draft Trades shook up the 1st round of the draft and will have a lingering effect in the later rounds and next year.
This list discusses the 2016 NFL Draft Trades that took place on the first night of this year’s draft.
1. Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans
- Cleveland received- No. 15 overall, No. 76 (3rd round) and 2017 2nd-round pick
- Tennessee received- No. 8 overall and No. 176 (6th round)
The Titans wanted to move up in order to improve there offensive line. They obviously felt that Jack Conklin wouldn’t last to their pick at No. 15 so made the jump. There were rumors that the New York Giants liked Conklin and they owned the No. 10 pick.
Cleveland was able to move down a few spots, get more draft picks and land the explosive Corey Coleman. I’m not a huge fan of his game, but it’s hard to ignore the upside.
2. Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- Chicago received No. 9 overall
- Tampa Bay received No. 11 and No. 106 (4th round)
The Bears felt they needed to jump past the New York Giants in order to land pass-rusher Leonard Floyd. They had an extra 4th round pick from trading away Martellus Bennett and were willing to part with it in order to get their guy. Floyd is an elite athlete who has a chance to be a special player.
3. Houston Texans and Washington Redskins
- Houston received No. 21 overall
- Washington received No. 22 and a 2017 6th-round pick
Houston moved up one spot to give their new quarterback, Brock Osweiler, a new weapon in Will Fuller. This trade likely took place because another team was talking with Washington in order to move up and grab Fuller. Giving up a future 6th round pick isn’t a steep price to pay for someone with Fuller’s potential.
4. Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks
- Denver received No. 26 overall
- Seattle received No. 31 and No. 94 (3rd round)
Denver gets their quarterback of the future in Paxton Lynch, but gave up some value to make the move. This draft’s best quality is the talent that will be available between the 2nd and 4th rounds. However, Denver did get some compensatory picks this year.
5. Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers
- Kansas City received No. 37 overall (2nd round), No. 105 (4th round) and No. 178 (6th round)
- San Francisco received No. 28 overall and No. 249 (7th round)
Kansas City was looking to add some picks after the NFL took away their 3rd rounder for tampering with Jeremy Maclin during last year’s free agency period. They obviously feel that this draft has enough talent that they can land players capable of making an impact with their next few picks.
