If I didn’t know better, I would think the Dallas Cowboys were cheating the draft. Last year, Randy Gregory failed a drug test to put himself down into the second round for the team to get him. Then offensive lineman La’el Collins’ ex gets killed and he’s brought in for questioning, causing him not to be drafted at all.

And of all teams from him to want to play for when it’s time to sign in undrafted free agency, it’s the Cowboys. That’s three 1st-round picks in one draft without having to trade up to get the other two. Then, here we are in the next draft and this time the Cowboys get to Top-5 picks without trading.

Smith conveniently had his knee surgery done by the Cowboys’ team doctor so no one knows Smiths’ situation better. He’s supposed to miss all of 2016 after tearing his ACL and LCL, but of course, the nerve damage he suffered has an “unpredictable” healing time.

Or is it?

It’s one thing that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was confident enough to take him in the second round. But it’s a different level of thinking to not put him on IR, shutting him down for the season. For him to take a chance on a guy and save a roster spot for him, Jones has to know something that the rest of us don’t know.

Jones told KRLD-FM, via a station producer, We will not IR him. Well take a chance he’ll be back for the playoffs.” He dismissed reports indicating Smith will need to sit out all of 2016 due to nerve damage in his knee, noting the unpredictability of healing nerves..

Picking Smith was a long-term investment for the Cowboys so they wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize his future. Their team doctor can easily tell the Cowboys things that they neglect to tell other teams. So the Cowboys definitely know something that the rest of the NFL doesn’t know right now.

Good for you, Cowboys!
