John Elway isn’t Counting Paxton Lynch Out
With Peyton Manning retired and Brock Osweiler in Houston, the quarterback position is in question for the Denver Broncos. GM John Elway first tried to fix the problem Colin Kaepernick but he wouldn’t take a pay cut it required. Then he signed Mark Sanchez, who has been to two AFC Championship Games, but no one is sold on him.
But Elway stayed patient and when the 2016 NFL Draft came, he traded up to Paxton Lynch, an intriguing prospect. Elway actually liked him better than Jared Goff and Carson Wentz from the start. Many believe it will take Lynch a couple of years to be ready to play quarterback in the NFL but Elway thinks it will be sooner.
He told KDSP-AM on Friday, per Pro Football Talk, “Is that going to happen tomorrow? Probably not, but you never know when it can happen. We think he’s going to be ready quicker than a lot of people think. He’s a young guy with tremendous athletic ability. He’s got the strong arm, can make all the throws, he’s smart, and he’s a guy that can fit into this offense real well.”
No one questions that from the 6’7 “, 246 pounder!
The question is how soon can he adjust to calling plays in a huddle, taking snaps under center, or take command of a huge playbook. That will take time, but offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak will spend plenty of that with him from now into the season. Marcus Mariota was a Spread Offense quarterback and he was able to play from day one.
And if Mark Sanchez is his competition, Lynch definitely has a chance!
