When you know you’ve drafted a good prospect that can help you, you have a plan for him. But when he slides into the second round of the draft because he failed a drug test, you have hopes for him. And when he gets to your team and he fails a drug test, you start praying for him.

That’s where the Dallas Cowboys are with 2015 2nd-round pick Randy Gregory these days. They didn’t get any major pass rushing help at defensive end during free agency or the draft. So they are left to pray that when Gregory gets back from his suspension, he comes in and balls out.

The prayers aren’t just about the bud (marijuana) smoking either, Gregory didn’t have a sack as a rookie. Owner Jerry Jones acknowledged to Fort Worth Star Telegram Wednesday that there is “no assurance” of what Gregory will be able to do this season, but he is well doing this offseason.

Jones said, “He’s got gifts. He understands he has gifts, God’s gifts. He’s got great human skills, personality. He is nothing short of brilliant. Certainly he has his demons. A lack of understanding of where he is not one of them.

“We pray for him. We want him to have the kind of career his gifts would allow him to have which is an exceptional, exceptional football player. He is probably the top rusher in the last two drafts. We need him. We want to get him back.”

Of course they want him back but at this point, they can’t plan for him to be back. They can’t even plan for Demarcus Lawrence to replace him because he’s been suspended for the same thing. And since Gregory already has a failed drug test and the combine in during his rookie year, hope is out.

The Cowboys are left to pray!

I’m praying for you, Randy!
