As well all know, the Tennessee Titans hope Marcus Mariota becomes their franchise quarterback. We also know that if Mariota gets hurt or doesn’t work out, the Titans are dead in the water. And this latest move the Titans made does nothing to change that.

On Monday, they cut backup Zach Mettenberger, their sixth-round draft pick from 2014. Every since the Titans signed Matt Cassel in to a one-year deal March, Mettenberger was whispered about as a candidate for release and it has finally happened.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand the move as far as releasing Mettenberger goes. He threw for just 5.6 yards per attempt in four starts last year. On top of that, Mettenberger turned the ball over in big spots before he was essentially yanked in Week 17 for Alez Tanney.

As far as it goes on the field right now, this is a lateral move for the Titans. Cassel was absolutely horrible in Dallas last season when he tried to take over for an injured Tony Romo when he was injured. Cassel is an aging veteran that already is who he is as a football player in the NFL.

Mettenberger at 24, 6’5″, 224 pounds with a big arm and the prototypical size, can still develop into a solid backup.  No matter what, the Titans aren’t going to win any more games if Cassel has to go in for an injured Mariota than if Mettenberger remained the backup.

So it’s all the same for the Titans—pray mariota doesn’t get hurt.
