You hate to see it happen but college football players are human and kids at that. So now, we have one of the top prospects of the 2017 NFL Draft getting himself into trouble. Alabama left tackle Cam Robinson was arrested early Tuesday morning in his hometown of Monroe, La..
The charges are felony illegal possession of stolen firearms and misdemeanor possession of a controlled dangerous substance. Illegal carrying of a weapon in the presence of narcotics was also among the charges that were thrown at Robinson.
Teammate Laurence “Hootie” Jones was also booked early Tuesday on the same charges. The players were arrested after a police officer smelled marijuana coming from Robinson’s vehicle as they were approaching it in the parking lot of a park at 2:33 a.m.
Head coach Nick Saban released a statement regarding the incident later on Tuesday. He said, “We are aware of the situation involving Hootie Jones and Cam Robinson and are in the process of gathering facts to determine what internal action needs to be taken.”
At 6’6″, 330 pounds, Robinson, a junior, is a tantalizing left tackle prospect entering his third year as a starter. And he’s considered a top-15 prospect by many of the college football evaluators. With the 2017 season to start in a few months he has the opportunity to climb to No. 1.
But one has to wonder if and how this incident will affect where Robinson goes in the draft in May. Seeing these kids do things like this with the opportunities they have in front of them makes you scratch your head. But again, they are kids and hopefully the lesson is learned here.
If he keeps his nose clean going forward, he may still have a chance to be a top pick.
