Las Vegas Talk Premature

Just weeks ago, Raiders owner Mark Davis pledged $500 million, $200 million of it not in his hand yet, to build the city in Las Vegas. Now all of the sudden, particularly to those in Los Angeles that would rather see the team anywhere but Oakland, the Raiders are en route to Las Vegas.

At the owners meetings Monday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said, “It’s very premature at this point. One, there is not a proposal that at least Mark has presented to us. It is my understanding that there is a proposal.

“Two, there is a great deal of work that needs to be done for ownership to make that kind of consideration. A variety of factors. The stadium itself, what the stadium proposal is, the market itself, the market studies, obviously in Las Vegas, it’s well documented we have to consider the impact from a  gambling standpoint. All those things are an ownership decision and until we have more information, it’s just pure speculation.”

So Davis’ incomplete pledge is based on a proposal that hasn’t been made yet and it doesn’t look like it will be. The city has already revealed that it’s No. 1 priority is expanding the convention center. Most of the hotel taxes will likely go there because that’s the city’s life blood.
