Von Miller Rejects Offer
With all the scouting, analytics and personality checks involved, building a great NFL roster is hard. And in the salary-cap era we are now in, it’s even harder maintain that great roster once it’s built. We have seen it with a few Super Bowl winning teams and the Denver Broncos are no exception.
The team has already lost ILB Danny Trevathan and DE Malik Jackson from their historically great defense this offseason. Now, the team is having a hard time holding on to OLB Von Miller. Of course, they still have the defensive star under the franchise tag but it’s uncertain for how long.
He just turned down an extension offer that would make him the highest paid defensive player in NFL history. According to NFL media insider James Palmer, the size of the offer was $114.5 million over six years. You would think Miller wouldn’t have a problem with such an offer.
But according to fellow NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport, there are questions about where Miller and the Broncos stand on guaranteed money and how much he stands to make over the first three years of the deal. Those details are major sticking points for Miller’s side right now.
The Broncos’ goal was to have Miller signed in time to attend this week’s minicamp. GM John Elway didn’t want a repeat of what happened with OT Ryan Clady and WR Demaryius Thomas after they missed offseason action in 2013 and 2015 respectively.
Miller said at a White House press conference that “real progress” had been made of late on a new deal. So it shouldn’t be too long before the face of the Broncos franchise has a secure future in Denver. If not, Miller simply has to play this year out under the tag amount of $14.129 million.
