Alshon Jeffery Reports to Minicamp
Chicago Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffery signed his $14.6 million franchise tender the team gave him back in March. But he didn’t attend any of the team’s important-but-mandatory OTAs. However, he will create not further drama as he reported to minicamp on Monday.
Jeffery can sign a longe-term deal with the Bears through up to July 15, but according to a report by the Chicago Tribune a couple of weeks ago, “It’s a near certainty Jeffery will play the 2016 season on the franchise tag.” The report has the Bears having questions about him.
They want to know about Jeffery’s durability, his drive, and his fit within the current system. It’s not hard to tell that his health is the main concern the Bears have for Jeffery at this time. When healthy, he is among the best at his position with 1,435 yards, seven TDs on 105 catches in 2013.
He also finished the 2014 season with 85 catches for 1,133 yards and 10 TDs in 16 games. I think it’s also safe to guess that 2015 1st-round pick Kevin White’s performance in 2016 will factor in as well. So while the Bears try to figure all this out, this is a big opportunity for Jeffery.
This is the kind of situation the franchise tag was made for. It’s also the perfect situation for both sides as a big year will drive up Jeffery’s value. It would also likely help the Bears win the NFC North and possibly make a deep run in the playoffs.
Look out NFC North, the Bears are coming if Jeffery can stay healthy with the defense they now have!
