In 2015, the Denver Broncos had a historically great year on defense en route to Super Bowl win. And that defense had a few players due to hit free agency this offseason that other teams willing to pay top dollar for. That left GM John Elway to figure out who to keep and who to let go.

DE Derek Wolfe was a big priority so his deal was done before he could hit the market. ILB Danny Trevathan and DE Malik Jackson got big contracts with Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars respectively. DeMarcus Ware, who’s in the twilight of his career, restructured his contract.

As of right now, All-World OLB Von Miller will play the 2016 season on the franchise tag. And Elway made sure ILB Brandon Marshall, who’s better than Trevathan isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. They signed him to a four years, $32 million, with $20 million in guarantees.

Over the past two seasons, Marshall compiled 215 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 13 passes defensed and two interceptions. He’s a great defender against the run and in pass coverage, making him the ideal linebacker for Wade Phillip’s blitzing defensive system.

With this deal done, the Elway’s focus has turned to signing Miller to an extension. Then the most important players from the team’s historically great defense in 2015 will be kept together. After that, Elway will most likely turn his attention to the future of the offensive side of the ball.

I’m sure receiver Emmanuel Sanders will be the first of the players on that side to get a deal.
