NFL Draft Bust-O-Meter: 5 rookies who will fail to meet expectations
By Jon Dove
Corey Coleman, WR, Cleveland Browns
Pick: 1st Round No. 15 overall
Bust-O-Meter: 2.9 out of 5
Corey Coleman is an elite athlete with the speed needed to take the top off a defense. He made a ton of big-plays while at Baylor and will be asked to do the same with the Cleveland Browns. This is a team that lacks offensive playmakers which means that Coleman will be called upon to make an immediate impact.
Coleman has several factors working against him which could lead to a disappointing rookie season. The biggest issue is that he is extremely raw as a route runner. While at Baylor, he was asked to run only a handful of routes—most of which weren’t very sophisticated.
Learning to run a bigger route tree is only part of the process as he also need to learn to read defenses. NFL offenses feature a lot of option routes that required the receiver to make the same reads as the quarterback and adjust his route accordingly.
Adding to the route-running problem is that fact that Coleman only “ran” routes when he was the main target. Baylor didn’t require the receivers away from the play to run routes. In fact, Coleman would barely walk off the line of scrimmage on have of his team’s snaps.
This means that Coleman also needs to learn to keep focus and play hard even if he isn’t the primary target.
Cleveland’s quarterback situation is also something working against Coleman. They are counting on Robert Griffin III to have a career revitalization. The Browns are hoping this happens behind a remade offensive line and with mainly rookie receivers.
