Von Miller and Denver Broncos Still Haggling
The Denver Broncos and OLB Von Miller have already agreed to six years for total of $114.5 million. And the two sides have until July 15 to get that long-term deal done. If not, Miller will have to either play under the $14.129 million franchise tag or sit out the 2016 season like he said.
Miller is coming off of a Super Bowl win and MVP so what’s the holdup?
The contract hasn’t been finalized because the two sides are still haggling over guaranteed money. And of course, the contract that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Fletcher Cox just signed factors in. Cox has $63 million guaranteed with over $55 million becoming fully guaranteed in early 2017.
So far, the Broncos have offered Miller $38.5 million fully guaranteed at signing with $58 million becoming fully guaranteed in early 2018. This does not sit well with Miller, who has had a much better career (60 sacks in five years to 22 in four for Cox) to date than Cox has.
So Miller wants a much greater overall guarantee (possibly $70 million or more), with the total guarantee coming in early 2017. Again, Miller is just fine with the total money with the six-year contract. So as of right now, the Broncos have until July 15 to up the ante.
There isn’t much the Broncos can do as the deal Cox signed makes the franchise tag not worth the risk of injury. There’s no way Miller will take less guaranteed money than Cox nor should he. So this haggling should end with Miller getting his $70 million-plus fully guaranteed by early 2017.
