The Cleveland Browns added Robert Griffin III via free agency with the hope that he’d be able to regain some of his old success.

However, there are already reports coming out of Cleveland that Robert Griffin III hasn’t looked good during OTAs. The talk is that he has been “underwhelming” which is obviously a terrible way to start his career with the Browns.

This is an important story line because Hue Jackson has openly stated that the team will hold a quarterback competition in training camp. The door looks to be open wider for 3rd-round pick Cody Kessler.

It was a surprise when the Browns grabbed Kessler ahead of several other higher rated quarterbacks such as Michigan State’s Connor Cook. The biggest thing is that Kessler doesn’t have the type of arm strength most teams look for in a starting NFL quarterback.

Kessler does his damage because of his accuracy and about to make quick decisions. He has a chance to succeed because he’s a smart individual who’ll take to the coaching provided by Hue Jackson.

History shows that Jackson is capable of crafting an offense that fits his quarterback. Developing an attack with Kessler under center might actually fit the other pieces on the Browns roster.

Their receiving corps is extremely young with rookies Corey Coleman, Rashard Higgins, Ricardo Louis and Jordan Payton expected to see significant playing time.

Coleman is an explosive athlete who needs to make major improvement with his route running. However, Jackson could draw up some plays that quickly gets the ball in Coleman’s hands and allows him to work.

This would also help protect Kessler and his lack of elite arm strength. Another thing that Jackson loves to do is run the football. A strong running attack opens things for play action which helps create favorable situations for receivers.

It’s extremely early in the process and the Browns are still going to give Griffin III every chance to win the starting job. However, this is a franchise and coach who won’t hesitate to plug Kessler in as the starter.
