Sterling Shepard is arguably already the second best wide receiver on the New York Giants roster.

The Giants wisely grabbed Sterling Shepard in the 2nd round of the 2016 NFL draft. Many who are frequently around the organization feel that it won’t take long for Shepard to become a major factor.

New York’s wide receiving corps is in a state of flux with most of the unit lacking a recent track record. Odell Beckham Jr. is the leader of the group and one of the most dynamic players in the NFL. However, he can’t carry the load by himself which means someone like Sterling Shepard will need to step up.

Shepard is being asked to play a bigger role because Victor Cruz’s recover is still on going and nobody is sure what type of production he’ll be able to provide. Even if Cruz is able to get on the field this is a thin group.

Dwayne Harris and Myles White are the only two others receivers on the roster capable of taking playing time away from Shepard.

The reason it’s safe to say that Shepard will have an immediate impact is because the combination of opportunity and skill level. Shepard is an excellent route runner who is able to create separation.

Beckham Jr.’s presence will give Shepard plenty of one-on-one opportunities. This is where Shepard’s ability to separate will be a major factor. His overall awareness and feel for the game will be something that makes him a quick favorite of Eli Manning.

The Giants have some issues along the offensive line which will force Manning to get the ball out quickly. Shepard excels at working across the middle as well as picking up yards after the catch.

This is just a player that fits what the Giants need and is as pro-ready as any receiver in the 2016 NFL draft class.
