Jaylon Smith’s knee injury was heartbreaking to see and it seems like it will be awhile before he’s back on the field.

Everyone was surprised when the Dallas Cowboys drafted Jaylon Smith in the 2nd-round of the 2016 NFL Draft. This has nothing to do with talent as when healthy Smith proved to be one of the top three players in his year’s draft.

It was surprising because of the Cowboys situation and the value of a 2nd round pick. Dallas is a team who feels they are primed to make a Super Bowl run. Despite their confidence, this is a roster that still has some holes.

Inside linebacker is a need, but as ESPN’s Ed Werder recently reported Smith isn’t expected to see the field this year.

Players like Myles Jack, Noah Spence and Chris Jones were selected after Smith and would’ve immediately filled a need in Dallas. The team’s depth along the defensive line is a major issue especially with DeMarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory facing 4-game suspensions.

It’s not a stretch to say that taking a risk on Smith could negatively impact their chances of making a Super Bowl run this year. The lack of talent and depth along the defensive line is something that could be a major issue.

Dallas’ secondary isn’t in the best condition and would’ve benefited from the pass-rushing presence a Spence and Jones would have provided. Instead they are hoping Rod Marinella could work a miracle and generate pressure with the likes of Ryan Russell, David Irving, Charles Tapper and Benson Mayowa.

We are all hoping that Smith is able to fully recover and get back on the field. However, that is far from a certainty. The Cowboys took a major risk which could become a major story line as this season progresses.
