The Denver Broncos have already lost QB Peyton Manning to retirement and DE Malik Jackson and ILB Danny Trevathan to free agency. So they have lost enough of their valuable pieces from their Super Bowl team. But one player they are hopeless to defend their title without OLB Von Miller.

The Broncos put the franchise tag on Miller but he says he will not play on it. He turned down an offer that would have made him the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL. But wants more guaranteed money like the Philadelphia Eagles gave DT Fletcher Cox in his huge contract.

The two sides broke off all talks for a while but July 15 is the deadline for franchise players to sign long-term deals. And I believe Miller when he says he’s not going to play in 2016 without one. I don’t see him risking injury for the $14.129 million franchise tag with the money Cox got.

So it’s time to for the Broncos and GM John Elway to stop playing and pay the man. He is now reaching out to Miller’s representatives, hoping emotions are calm when talks grow more serious next week. The Broncos know Miller’s value to the team and the importance of re-signing him.

So this game of chicken and taking all the way down to the final minute doesn’t make sense. But everything is done at the last minute in the NFL so it is what it is. I guess Elway knows what he’s doing so we’ll see if the Broncos will have their star edge-rusher come the 15th.
