Eric Berry Disappointed in Contract Situation
After all Kansas City Chiefs S Eric Berry has done for the team, he doesn’t have a contract. The 2015 NFL Comeback Player of the year was given the franchise tag back in March along with guys like Von Miller of Denver Broncos and Muhammad Wilkerson of the New York Jets.
And like the other two, Berry has until the July 15 deadline to sign a long-term contract. At that point, he can either play for the $10.8 million franchise tender or not play at all. Also like Wilkerson and Miller, it should be no surprised to no one if he doesn’t report to the Chiefs until a deal is done.
Berry has been to three more Pro Bowls (four) and has the same number of All-Pro selections (two) than the league’s highest-paid safety in Harrison Smith of the Minnesota Vikings. And Smith signed a five-year, $51.25 million extension with his Vikings back in June.
Put that together with what QB Brock Osweiler and DT Fletcher Cox got this offseason and you can’t blame any one of the aforementioned stars for not reporting to their respective teams. Berry sounded disappointed but hopeful when talking about negotiations to The Kansas City Star .
He said, “I thought it would progress a little bit more. But it’s still been pretty much the same since the last time we talked. A lot can change in a week. A lot can change for whenever the deadline is.”
The Chiefs are already missing CB Sean Smith, who is now with the Oakland Raiders, so not having Berry for any amount of time is big.
