Quarterback
Starter: Jimmy Garoppolo
Backup: Jacoby Brissett

I’m not listing Tom Brady on this version of the depth chart because he won’t be available until after he serves his 4-game suspension. It’s Jimmy Garoppolo’s show to run until week 5 and he’ll be expected to keep the Patriots in contention.

At this point, rookie Jacoby Brissett is slated to head into training camp as the backup. It’s possible that the Patriots look to bring in a veteran quarterback in order to have a more seasoned backup option.

Running Back
Starter: Dion Lewis
Backup: LeGarrette Blount

Dion Lewis and LeGarrette Blount will be the main ball carriers for the Patriots with James White being mixed in from time to time. Lewis is still recovering from a knee injury but looks to be on schedule to be ready for training camp.

New England uses their running backs differently than most other NFL teams. They basically develop a game plan based on their weekly opponent. This means that one week Blount could get 20 carries and then the next Lewis gets the bulk of the touches.

Things could be a little different with Garoppolo under center which could force the Patriots to stick to a more traditional approach.
