David Amerson to Live up to Contract with Oakland Raiders
Misfit in Washington
Amerson’s junior year wasn’t like his 2011 campaign so he dropped into the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, where the Washington Redskins took him. As a rookie, Amerson looked like a second-round gem and a budding star with two INTs and 10 passes defensed in eight starts.
But in 2014, his second year as a pro, when you’re supposed to make a big leap forward, Amerson took a big leap backward. All the talk about him being a second-round steal turned into second-round bust. Amerson had only seven passes defensed and no INTs in 15 starts in 2014.
Meanwhile, he gave up almost 1,000 yards, 10 TDs, and a quarterback rating of 140.2 into his coverage. Seeing how he gave up such big numbers looks even worse than the production itself. He often read routes wrong, causing him to bite and get beat deep.
Amerson also had a lot of miscommunications, seeming not to know when he had help over the top. It was as if he didn’t know what he was doing as bombs were constantly dropped over his head. Pro Football Focus had him graded as the worst corner in the NFL that year.
