Right Tackle: Austin Howard, Menelik Watson

I’m not sure what the status is on Austin Howard or Menelik Watson are at this time. I heard that Watson is a little futher along in his Achilles rehab than Howard is on his knee rehab. But at some point, Howard is going to reclaim his starting right tackle job.

After a failed experiment at the guard position, Howard came back and played very well last year. However, he had to do so after Watson was injured and that just wasn’t right. Watson was given the right tackle job in the beginning while not playing very well in preseason games.

But when Howard got his chance to play he didn’t look back, shinning until he was injured himself. I like Watson, who I see more as a left tackle prospect but we’re talking about now and Howard is the better player. Watson is a tremendous athlete but injuries have stunted his development.

And now, the Raiders have a chance to win a division title so they don’t have time to try too hard to develop someone. Howard was the No. 15 rated tackle by Pro Football Focus so since he is much more proven, he should start and Watson should be the backup.
