Left Tackle, Donald Penn, Menelik Watson

Donald Penn as been rock solid ever since he signed with the Raiders back in 2014. So it is a good thing for the Raiders that Osemele was brought in to play next to him instead of replace him. Much of the credit for quarterback Derek Carr’s jump in Year two was given to the offensve line.

That is true but extra credit has to be given to Penn as he usually lines up on the oppposing team’s best pass rusher. And he was rated the NFL’s 11th best pass-blocking offensive tackle by Pro Football Focus. When you consider the pass-rushers he sees in the AFC West, that’s outstanding.

Still a good athlete at his size at age 33, Penn doesn’t appear to be slowing down at all. It would be nice to see him bring his run-blocking up to what is was when he was in Tampa Bay but if he has another year just like last year, Carr and the Raiders will be just fine on offense.

So expect Penn to be back in his spot as Carr’s blind-side protector as those guys are hard to find. Watson will be his main backup as he will be the first tackle off the bench if either of the starting tackles end up getting injured. Let’s just hope that Watson doesn’t get injured though.
