After he was shot in the leg at a nightclub on June 5, Denver Broncos CB Aqib Talib told the Denver Post last week that he “feels great” and that he’s “back running and everything.” He was also expecting to be back on the field when the Broncos open training camp on Thursday.

But the Broncos will keep the star corner off the field at least for the start of training camp. Talib will find himself starting camp on the NFL non-football injury list instead. According to the Dallas Police Department. Talib was shot by an “unkown suspect.”

The Dallas Police Department also noted that one gram of marijuana was found by police, but no one was charged. Separate from the investigation done by the Dallas Police Department, the NFL is doing their own investigation with league discipline pending the result.

As far as football and Talib’s well-being goes, this is not a bad thing for him and the Broncos at all. After having such trauma to his leg, there’s no need to rush him back into the rigors of an NFL training camp. As you’ve heard many times, an NFL season is a marathon, not a sprint.

And the object is to make it all the way through the season once you get started. Given what has happened, Talib is lucky he’ll be playing football at all during the 2016 season. Defensive end DeMarcus Ware, who battled back issues last season, is in the same boat.

The Broncos are just taking care of their players.
