Eric Fisher Signs Huge Extension
Wow, the Kansas City Chiefs are being extremely patient with 2013 No. 1 overall pick Eric Fisher. All but pronounced a bust after his first three seasons, the team has signed him to an extension.
According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, the extension is worth four years, $48 million, with $40 million guaranteed. That puts him under contract for the next six seasons for $63 million with the Chiefs.
NFL.com quoted GM John Dorsey saying, “We were able to reach an agreement with Eric and his representatives on a contract extension. In three seasons, he’s grown significantly as a football player in our system. He’s a tough, physical presence and a leader on our offensive line.
“We look forward to keeping him as a part of our organization and community.”
The Chiefs just picked up Fisher’s fifth-year option in May, giving him $3.4 million and $11.9 million the next two seasons, respectively. That’s too much in itself and when you look at what he makes after, it’s hard to understand why they would extend him for that amount.
It looked liked the casket closed on his career when he lost his left tackle job. But he improved and and got the left tackle job back midway through last season. Pro Football Focus has Fisher allowing 42 pressures as a rookie, 42 pressures in 2014 and 37 in 2015.
That is a show of improvement but Pro Football Focus has him rated the No. 36 tackle overall and No. 49 in pass protection. Yet he’s getting paid like one of the top eight left tackles in the NFL in average money per year and top five in overall value of contact.
The Chiefs are hop that Fisher will improve to the point where he’s worthy of the big money. That’s a hope, not a plan because he has done nothing to show he can block Von Miller and Khalil Mack. It’s almost as if the Chiefs are paying Fisher to keep Miller and Mack’s numbers up.
No one is happier about this contract than Miller and Mack themselves.
Good luck Chiefs!
