This could be the year for the Dallas Cowboys but all the suspensions have it in question. Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, who lead the team in sacks with eight last year, is suspended for four games. And 2015 first-round pick Randy Gregory has been suspended at least 10 games.

So the Cowboys can use one edge rusher to bridge the gap all these suspensions have left.  And Dwight Freeney, who showed that he was still an effective at age 36, was out there for a long time. He led the Arizona Cardinals in sacks last year with eight in 11 games in a part-time role.

He would have been perfect to start the season, stay in there with Lawrence when he gets back then give way to Gregory when he returns. No one is sure that Gregory, who hasn’t reported to camp yet, will play in 2016. Rumor had it that the Cowboys were considering him.

But they fell asleep at the wheel and Freeney went on to sign with the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday. The Cincinnati Bengals were another team that was interested in Freeney’s services. He still has his trademark spin move and would have been a good mentor to Gregory and Lawrence.

A man with 119.5 sacks in 194 games over 14 seasons has plenty of knowledge to pass on to young players trying to figure it out. He could assume the role that Demarcus Ware will play in Denver this year. mentoring Shane Ray. I guess his character is too good for the Cowboys.
