The 1st week of the preseason is in the books and several teams a NFL rookie quarterback see some action.

There are several NFL rookie quarterback performances from the weekend that really stood out. Some were expected and others were a surprise. The top 2 picks from the 2016 NFL Draft, Jared Goff and Carson Wentz, got their first taste of the NFL and both came away with injuries.

Wentz’s injury is the more serious with him expected to miss most of the preseason. However, Goff’s injury didn’t help him get any closer to winning the Los Angeles Rams starting quarterback job.

Maybe the biggest surprise of the weekend was that the New York Jets decided not to give their 2nd round pick, Christian Hackenberg, any time on the field. They instead let Geno Smith and Bryce Petty handle the backup duties.

This is a huge surprise because the preseason is a great opportunity for young quarterbacks to get their feet wet. The games don’t mean anything in the win-loss column which put less pressure on rookie quarterbacks.

Another surprise was the performance of Jake Rudock who looked good in his pro-debut with the Detroit Lions. He’s not someone who’ll see action as a rookie, but he is fighting for a roster spot.
