Will Colin Kaepernick Start Kaepernicking Again?
San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly was hired to save quarterback Colin Kaepernick. And after it looked like he’d never play for Kelly, it’s time to see what Kaepernick can do under him.
Back in 2012 and 2013, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick took the NFL by storm. He ran and threw his way to two NFC Championship games and appeared in one Super Bowl. And in the process, he dazzled and gained notoriety.
When he scored a TD, he celebrated by kissing his bicep, which they call “Kaepernicking.” But in 2014, his play fell off a bit and former head coach Jim Harbaugh got fired. Jim Tomisula then took over tried to turn him into more of a prototypical QB.
But that didn’t seem to work out so well and that’s when he was healthy enough to play. All the king’s horses and all the king’s men put Kaepernick back together with multiple surgeries this offseason. And the 49ers hired Chip Kelly to see if he can save him.
But for whatever the reason, he wanted no part of it, wanting a trade instead. Then Blaine Gabbert started the first five games for the team with many waiting to see if Kaepernick would play. The wait is over now and Sunday, we’ll see what he has.
Big factors for Kaepernick are his early success and what Kelly did with Nick Foles in 2013. He also has running back Carlos Hyde, who defenses have to worry about as he slips through the back door. But there are also factors against the embattled quarterback.
One, the passing system is so simple, defensive coordinators figured out what they’re doing. And the other is running quarterback has ever survived in the NFL. Steve Young and Randall Cunningham became pocket passers as did Michael Vick.
So what do you think?
