UCLA’s Takkarist McKinley is a fast-rising prospect who should hear his name called during the 1st round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Takkarist McKinley is a long and athletically built pass-rushing prospect. He uses a combination of speed, length and a non-stop motor to get the job done. However, it’s his speed and closing burst that separates him from the pack.

That speed allows McKinley to attack the edge and close on the quarterback. It also opens up an inside counter move which McKinley uses effectively thanks to his suddenness.

His speed is his best attribute, but McKinley flashes the ability to get after the quarterback using a bull rush and inside rip. McKinley’s length and inside hand placement are what allows him to push the pocket.

However, he needs to be more consistent with his pad level in order to maintain leverage. His overall strength is also something he needs to improve.

McKinley is a hard worker who never stops pursing the football. He doesn’t hesitate to chase the ball carrier several yards down field. His effort also jumps off the screen when his pass rush is initially stopped. McKinley fights after contact keeping his feet moving and looking to work off the block.

His tenacity shows up in his effort to support the run. McKinley will fight for position and work to hold at the point of attack. However, he needs to add a little bulk and get stronger in order to be a more effective run defender.

It’s important to note that McKinley is still developing as a player. He’s just scratching the surface of his talent. His play and consistency will improve with more experience and coaching. McKinley’s effort on the field speaks positively to his willingness to be coached.

This is a highly explosive athlete who has already shown the ability to generate pressure on the quarterback. He should be able to make an early impact in the NFL based on those raw skills and non-stop motor.
