The Oakland Raiders are relevant these days because they have a quarterback. And now, he is reminiscent of the legends of the past.

The Oakland Raiders were once the winningest professional sports franchise. They at least went to a Conference Championship Game in every decade of the NFL’s existence except of this one. That’s because they always had a quarterback that could lead the way.

Daryle Lamonica, Ken Stabler, Jim Plunkett and Rich Gannon are the legends that led the way. Then from 2002 to now, the Raiders haven’t so much as made the playoffs. And it’s no coincidence they haven’t had a good quarterback in that time frame.

Now, the Raiders have Derek Carr, whom the Raiders drafted in 2014. And he has since matured into a franchise quarterback and NFL MVP candidate. Carr has a mixture of traits that all these legendary Raiders quarterbacks had in their day.

He is one part Lamonica, two parts Stabler, one part Plunkett and one part Gannon. So far, Carr has shown that he has each one of their best traits in spades. This is why in only Year 3, he has the Raiders poised for the playoffs for the first time since 2002.
