Myles Garrett Ends Debate For No. 1 Overall Pick
Myles Garrett showed he is an absolute freak at the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine Sunday. If there was any doubt of who the No. 1 overall pick should be, there shouldn’t be now!
There was a time that I had Jonathan Allen going to the Cleveland Browns at No. 1 overall. I thought the team picked a couple of nice DEs last year and might get a DT. Also at that time, I thought that Allen was a comparable prospect to Myles Garrett.
But of course, the more tape I watched, the more I found that not to be true. Allen will likely be a great player in the NFL but Garrett is just different, in a class by himself. He is a freak athlete with speed, power, length, agility and skills for the position.
Many compare him to 2014 No. 1 overall Jadeveon Clowney and physically, that’s accurate. Clowney went to combine at 6’5″, 266 pounds with 34.5-inch long arms. He blazed a 4.53 40, had a 37.5-inch vertical leap and repped 225 pounds 21 times.
Garrett went in a little shorter at 6’4″, heavier at 272 pounds and with longer arms at 35.25 inches. Athletically, he’s a tick slower at 4.64 in the 40 but more explosive with a 41-inch vertical leap. Garrett is also much stronger with 33 reps of 225 pounds.
But what separates him from Clowney is that he’s more fluid and much more skilled as a player. Clowney just started to get the technical aspect of the game in Year 3 and Garrett has it now. Garrett is going to be a star in the NFL the minute he puts the uniform on.
There were rumors that the Browns were considering taking Trubisky over Garrett. Not that I believe them but if they were to do that, people would get fired in a couple of years. But after his performance Sunday, that ain’t gonna happen.
