Post-Combine Scouting Reports: Christian McCaffrey
Questions and Concerns
McCaffrey went over the top or found the soft spot in short yardage in college. That worked in Allen’s Hall of Fame career in the NFL but we don’t know if that will for McCaffrey. So his NFL team may have to take him off the field in short yardage and near the goal line.
Another area is pass protection as the big, 250-pound LBs come full speed at the QB. He was okay at it at Stanford but he will have to get better just to be okay at it in the NFL. Those defenses will scheme for him if they know that he’s one of the RBs that can’t protect the passer.
There’s also some concerns about the tread on his tires as he goes into the NFL. His 745 touches in college could be too much wear and tear before he plays in his first NFL game. That has happened to a few RBs, causing them to end up being a bust.
He also has to go a team that’s creative enough to know how to use him. A team looking for three yards and a cloud of dust from their running backs need not pick McCaffrey. He can run between the tackles but he should also be used as a matchup weapon on a passing team.
