NFL Free Agency: Signing Andrew Whitworth will be major help for Jared Goff

The Los Angeles Rams are nearing a deal with Andrew Whitworth who’ll serve as the blindside protector for Jared Goff.

Jared Goff had a rough rookie season where he looked uncomfortable and hurried. A lot of his struggles could be pinned on the poor play of the Los Angeles Rams offensive line.

That unit struggled protecting the quarterback which resulted in Goff having to make some extremely quick decisions. Los Angeles hopes they have addressed this problem by inking Andrew Whitworth to a 3-year deal.

The reports by Jason La Canfora, shows that the Rams were extremely aggressive in finding someone to help protect their young quarterback.

Whitworth is not only a top-flight player but is also a strong leader who will help in the locker room. It will also allow the Rams to shuffle their offensive line. Look for former left tackle Greg Robinson moving to either guard or right tackle.

Los Angeles still has some work to do as they are on the verge of losing their top receiver, Kenny Britt, to the Cleveland Browns. This would make life tougher for Goff as Britt was the team’s most reliable pass catcher.

Without Britt, the Rams will need to lean on Tavon Austin even more as the teams only established veteran. The rest of the unit is painfully thin and consisting of former mid to late round draft picks.

Making the situation worse is the fact that Rams are without this year’s 1st round pick which was used to acquire Goff. It’ll be interesting to see how the Rams work the rest of the offseason. On the surface this team is still not ready to compete.

This makes Whitworth’s decision to sign with Los Angeles more interesting because he appears willing to go through the rebuild process.
