With just minutes left in the old league year, the Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns made a big trade.

I have to give it to the Houston Texans for taking a page out of the Houston Rockets’ book. The NBA started the business of trading players to teams and getting nothing in return. The aim is make the other team with more salary cap space absorb the player’s salary.

For the first time in NFL, history, such a trade was made between the Texans and Cleveland Browns. The Texans had a serious case of buyer’s remorse for 2016 free agent QB Brock Osweiler. He is getting paid a lot of money to not have played so well in 2016.

With the defense and the rest of the offense the Texans have, a QB could put them in the Super Bowl. But with the money they were spending on Osweiler, that wasn’t going to happen. So while they wait on the release of Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo, they need extra cap space.

The Denver Broncos would also become contenders with Romo and have a lot of interest. So this was a brilliant move by the Texans to clear up some cap space for him. This wasn’t a bad move for the Browns either as they continue to rebuild with three second-round picks in 2018.

As far as Osweiler goes, the Browns need to get up to the salary cap floor. Plus they would only have to pay him for one year before cutting him so the contract isn’t bad. Or since they have so much cap space, they can cut him immediately and absorb the dead money.

So now, the Texans wait for Romo to get cut!
