The Complications

We start with the complications, the main one being the Seahawks have Lynch’s rights. Of course, the Seahawks can do whatever they want, be it holding out for as much as they can or cutting him.  They were apparently on the verge of cutting him last year.

He was coming off an injury-plagued season and the team was set to pay him $9 million last year. But when a team hears another team is interested in a player they no longer want to cut him. So the Raiders inquired about Lynch last year but he decided to stay retired.

The Raiders have spent a lot of money since then plus they have Derek Carr and Khalil Mack to sign. So they can no longer afford to pay his $9 million-salary. They need the Seahawks to release him so they can negotiate their own contract with them.

The Seahawks can simply squat on him but if Lynch comes back, they have problems. They would have to cut him or someone because they just signed RB Eddie Lacy to a contract. So there’s potential for a Mexican standoff between the Raiders and Seahawks.
