Derek Carr helped the Raiders get what they needed on offense by recruiting. Khalil Mack needs to help the Raiders defense in the same way.

Oakland Raiders OLB Bruce Irvin got the nickname “Baby Reggie” because of his plan to recruit free agents this offseason. But he was not successful in any of his attempts to get a big-time free agent. Meanwhile, QB Derek Carr cleaned up in his recruiting efforts.

He met with guys like WR/KR Cordarrelle Patterson and TE Jared Cook to tell them how he would use them. It was that easy for Carr while Irvin went out of the country to sell free agent ILB Zach Brown. And sure, he came through Raider Nation but left without signing.

I love Irvin but it would be best it he gave up the recruiting job to Khalil Mack. Free agents want to know that the best and most important players on the team want them. That’s why Carr said, “You’re not leaving without signing.” and they didn’t.

Irvin is a good player but doesn’t have the same cachet Carr has around the league. But Mack, the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year, has just as much. A pitch to play for the Raiders sounds a little better coming from the most dominant defensive player in the game.

So it is time for the Raiders’ defensive superstar to step up his efforts to recruit free agents. Brown is still unsigned and the Raiders are actually still in the fight to end up with him. The Raiders have a good shot of getting to the Super Bowl if they land Brown.

Let’s go, Mack!
