Former Oakland Raiders backup QB Matt McGloin wants a chance to start somewhere. He should probably settle for a chance to be on a team.

The resurgence of the Oakland Raiders started with the 2014 NFL Draft. it was there that they got 2016 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Khalil Mack and franchise QB Derek Carr. They’ve continued to draft well and get solid free agents to stack rest of the roster too.

But from 2012 and 2014, the Raiders had the roster of an expansion team. So a lot of players that really weren’t good enough to be starters in the NFL started for the Raiders. The team was in its deconstruction phase, getting out of all of the bad contracts they were in.

So the Raiders had to start someone and for a stretch, they started Matt McGloin at QB. It was good for McGloin to get some starting experience but bad for him in another way. It Made him believe that he was good enough to be a starting QB in the NFL.

And all the while, he was actually horrible on the occasions that he had to go in for Carr. The way he played mixed with what he said back in January makes one wonder what he was on. He was asked back in January where he might want to go in free agency.

And he said per ESPN:

"“Somewhere where they will give me a chance to compete for a starting role.”"

I thought he was looking into playing in another league but he was talking about the NFL. But he is just one of many Raiders from that time that thought they were starters after that taste. And as of now, no one has even looked to sign him as a backup.

But one can dream.
