42. The San Francisco 49ers quietly set themselves up for this deep defensive draft in free agency. They picked up QB Brian Hoyer, who’s better than you think and will be even better under HC Kyle Shanahan. The 49ers got him a couple of weapons too in WRs Pierre Garcon and Marquise Goodwin.
They even did something to improve Hoyer’s pass protection, signing C Jeremy Zuttah this offseason. So here at No. 2 overall, they can simply go with best player available, which well be a defensive player. The 49ers will run a lot of cover-1 and cover-3 in 2017 so the best player available will fit.

The best player available here at No. 2 overall will be Jamal Adams, who is everything the 49ers want. He’s physical enough to play in the box, solid in man coverage and has great single-high S instincts. And to go with those instincts, he has blazing 4.33 40 speed, giving him all kinds of range.

Then to top it all off, Adams is a great tempo-setter, a leader that elevates those around him. You need players like Adams when you’re trying to turn the culture in your franchise around. Adams would go in, play well, have the 49ers defense playing much better and the team more competitive immediately.

. S. LSU. Jamal Adams. 2. player
