15. With the No. 11 overall pick in the draft, the New Orleans Saints select former Tennessee DE Derek Barnett. At 6’3″. 260 pounds with 32 1/8-inch-long arms, he doesn’t have the height or length that scouts are looking for. And after running a 4.88 40 while he was sick at the combine, he ran a 4.89 at his pro day.

So he doesn’t have the speed that scouts are looking for in players at his position either. But he knows how to get to opposing QBs and he is as productive an edge rusher prospect as can be. Barnett is a skilled hand fighter that swats at a tackle’s hands, giving them no chance to block him.

To go with his technique he’s also strong and has a relentless motor that runs until the game is over. The sum of all of Barnett’s parts equals a guy that’s ready to go in and have a big, immediate impact. He’s just what the doctor ordered for the Saints, who need to get DE Cameron Wake some help.

The Saints also have 2016 first-round DT Sheldon Rankins, who improved the pass rush from inside last year. A little defense to go with Drew Brees and the offense and the Saints will drastically improve. So after this pick, they have one more at the very bottom of the first round to do that.
. DE.
