SS. UConn. Obi Melifonwu. 2. player. 28. I had Obi Melifonwu with the Raiders in the first round for most of the offseason. There was no way that I could see him going in the second round and I am pleasantly shocked. The kid has CB hips, feet and speed but he’s 6’4″, 225 pounds, can hit and can tackle.

So that makes him a SS that can shut down opposing TEs and play the run in the box. He was No. 9 in run-stop percentage and No. 17 in tackling efficiency among FBS Ss in 2016. Many like to compare him to Kam Chancellor because of his size and ability to cover TEs.

He doesn’t quite hit that hard but he is just as reliable a tackle as Chancellor was coming out. Melifonwu actually has better coverage talent as he can over bigger WRs. With that 4.4 40 speed, he has range to cover the back end when the FS covers the slot.

Speaking of which, he allows Karl Joseph, who’s excellent at covering the slot, to move to free safety. The Raiders didn’t have the real Joseph last year has he was coming off an ACL tear. Because the Raiders now have Melifonwu now, Joseph will get to play his natural position.
