The Dallas Cowboys are kicking things off by having their rookies report to camp today which includes several players ready to make an immediate impact.

It’s the Dallas Cowboys defense that should see the biggest boost from rookies this year. Last year, it was the offense that was greatly impacted by the arrival of Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott. It would be a lot to expect anywhere the near impact of last year’s rookies.

The biggest addition is 1st rounder Taco Charlton who has a great chance to earn a starting job. He’s a two-way defensive end who supports the run and gets after the quarterback.

Charlton burst onto the scene last year and is still developing as a player. However, his combination of length and quickness give him a chance to be a top-notch pass rusher. The Cowboys obviously targeted Charlton based on their need at the position.

Dallas’ defensive backfield is also counting on rookies to make a significant impact. Both Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis will see immediate playing time.

The Cowboys have average at best starters in place with Nolan Carroll, Orlando Scandrick and Anthony Brown. It wouldn’t be a major surprise if both rookies are starting by the end of the season.

Awuzie is versatile enough that he could even see some action at safety. Byron Jones is locked in at one starting spot, but Jeff Heath has to prove himself yet again. Rookie Xavier Woods could also get some run at safety. He’s a big-time hitter who loves playing in the box.

The Cowboys offense could get some help from receiver Ryan Switzer. He’s an undersized target who will do his damage out of the slot. Switzer fits this role well thanks to his quickness and route running ability.
