2018 NFL Mock Draft: Mid-August Update
By Jon Dove
25. Seattle Seahawks- Josh Sweat, Edge, Florida State
During their recent success, the Seattle Seahawks heavily relied on their defense to win games. The secondary gets a lot of the attention, but the defensive line played an equally important part. That group could start to see some turnover in the near future.
Michael Bennett is getting older and more expensive. Cliff Avril is a pending free agent who could find work elsewhere. Finding a young pass rusher like Florida State’s Josh Sweat could help the Seahawks avoid a drop off.
26. Dallas Cowboys- Christian Wilkins, DL, Clemson
The Dallas Cowboys are pretty much set on the offensive side of the ball with Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliot and Dez Bryant. They have made strides in rebuilding their defense, but there is still work to be done. The defensive line is an area that could use some upgrades.
Rod Marinelli runs a defense that’s at its best when the front-4 creates most of the pressure. His system becomes even better when he gets pressure from the interior. In the past he has had disruptive defensive tackles like Warren Sapp and Tommie Harris.
Clemson’s Christian Wilkins features the quickness and motor to develop into penetrating defensive tackle.
27. Pittsburgh Steelers- Cameron Smith, LB, USC
It’ll be interesting to see how the Pittsburgh Steelers adjust to the loss of Lawrence Timmons. They are hoping that the combination of Ryan Shazier and Vince Williams is the future. However, Shazier has dealt with injuries and Williams has never been a full-time starter.
If this duo should fail, the Steelers could target someone like USC’s Cameron Smith. He’s a very instinctive linebacker who is constantly around the football.
28. Tennesse Titans- Clelin Ferrell, Edge, Clemson
The Tennessee Titans have one of the deepest rosters in the league which makes it hard to find a fit for a mock draft. However, they could a young pass rusher to eventually replace Brian Orakpo and Derrick Morgan.
Tennessee was hoping that Kevin Dodd would be that guy, but his stock is way down after a disappointing rookie season. Fellow Clemson alum, Clelin Ferrell, could be the answer should Dodd’s struggles continue.
