Franchise Tag Likelihood: Extremely Low
Predicted New Team: San Francisco 49ers
It seems like a foregone conclusion that Kirk Cousins will reunite with Kyle Shanahan. This has a great chance to actually happen as it doesn’t appear that Cousins will stick in Washington. The Redskins have mishandled the entire negotiation process and can’t afford to use the Franchise Tag again.
Cousins would put the San Francisco 49ers rebuild into hyper drive. He’s a veteran leader who has put up excellent numbers over the past few years. Adding Cousins would solve the 49ers quarterback issues and allow them to use their draft assets to address other needs.
There plenty of other teams that would likely jump into the Cousins sweepstakes. I could imagine the Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins and Denver Broncos all making realistic offers.
Jacksonville would be an interesting fit because that team is built to win now. However, they are being held back by the poor play of Blake Bortles. Cousins would make this a completely different team and a realistic Super Bowl contender.
The big storyline here is going to be how much money Cousins is able to command. He has set himself up for a major payday.
