Predicting the Landing Spot for Top Potential 2018 NFL Free Agents
By Jon Dove
Trumaine Johnson
Current Team: Los Angeles Rams
Franchise Tag Likelihood: Extremely Low
Predicted New Team: Chicago Bears
Trumaine Johnson has developed into one of the better cornerbacks in the NFL. His combination of size and athleticism gives him the ability to matchup with any receiver in the league. The Los Angeles Rams know his value which is why they used the franchise tag the past two seasons.
However, it’s almost impossible for them to use it for a third straight year. The cost would be to big and create a salary cap problem. Their inability to hammer out a long term deal over the past few years doesn’t create optimism for one this offseason.
Johnson would be a great addition for the Chicago Bears who need a difference maker at the cornerback position. They were rumored to be in the bidding for Stephon Gilmore and A.J. Bouye this past offseason so it makes sense for them to target Johnson.
Chicago will have plenty of cap space and could make a big-money offer. Adding Johnson would give them another piece to their improving defense. It would also free up some draft capital which would need to be used on a cornerback if they strike out in free agency.
