It’s Senior Bowl week which means that we will see some changes in how different prospects are viewed moving forward.
The first big portion of the Senior Bowl week is the weigh-ins and measurements. It gives the NFL scouts a chance to see exactly how tall or how much each prospect weighs. This might sound like useless knowledge, but every year it ends up making a difference for several prospects.
Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield is one of the bigger name prospects whose measurements will be key. His overall height has been a question mark for years. Mayfield will certainly see his stock drop some if he measures below 6’0″.
Another important measurement for the quarterbacks will be the hand size. In the past, we have seen quarterbacks with smaller hands have fumble issues.
For the offensive and defensive linemen the most important measurement is arm length. Scouts want to see a trench player who can consistently gain inside hands and keep clean. This is why having good arm length is important.

The weight of players will only become a topic of conversation if there’s a big variance one way or another. Someone who is well above their reported playing weight could be labeled with conditioning problems.
Someone with less than ideal bulk could be seen as a durability concern. This may all seem like over evaluating a prospect, but the small things like this could determine where a player is ultimately selected.
There are 100’s of prospects who want to hear their name called during the draft weekend. Sometimes even the smallest detail will help that dream come true.
