If the goal at No. 1 overall was to find someone to improving the passing offense, the No. 4 overall selection must be utilized to improve the passing defense. With Myles Garrett being looked to as a potential anchor along the defensive line, the next step is to shore up the secondary.

The Cleveland Browns takes a significant step in the right direction by adding Alabama Crimson Tide defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick is widely regarded as a player with the potential to develop into a legitimate shutdown corner. He’s also displayed the versatility to potentially play safety at the highest possible level, which only adds to the appeal of bringing in another dynamic defensive back.

Whether he plays cornerback or safety at the next level, he’d help Garrett anchor what would have the potential to become a vastly improved passing defense as soon as 2018.

For those who doubt how badly the Browns must improve against the pass, just check the numbers. Only five teams allowed more passing touchdowns than Cleveland in 2017, and only one defense came away with fewer interceptions.

With Jason McCourty set to turn 31 years of age in August, the time is now for the Browns to invest their seemingly limitless resources into improving the defense.
