Is The Window Still Open?

The question for a veteran team like the Cincinnati Bengals is quite simple: Is the championship window still open? There are many who are just now coming into their own, but there are also a decent amount of players on the roster who are already in the prime of their careers.

Thankfully, the Bengals have built the foundation for a return to elite status on defense—and thus, a reemergence as a contender.

If the veterans stay true to form and the younger players continue to develop, the Bengals’ defensive line should continue to be a strength. Carlos Dunlap and Carl Lawson are pass-rushing specialists, Geno Atkins does it all, and Jordan Willis and Michael Johnson are solid against the run.

At cornerback, William Jackson and Darqueze Dennard provide the outside and slot coverage versatility to excel in the modern era.

The areas in which the Bengals must improve are at linebacker and, despite what’s been said, cornerback. Cincinnati needs at least one more defensive back who can play at a high level, and the linebacker corps is weak beyond Vontaze Burfict.

Thus, while fixing the offensive line must be the top priority for the Bengals in 2017, the organization is too close to contending to ignore the possibilities.
