Vontae Davis was released by the Indianapolis Colts which means he’s able to sign with a new team like the Oakland Raiders immediately.

The Oakland Raiders have a few holes to fill this season with the cornerback spot being one. Their secondary was one of the weaker points of the team last year. This is a franchise that is looking at making a playoff run and would be wise to target a veteran like Vontae Davis.

It’s a unique situation for Davis who was released by the Indianapolis Colts. He is free to sign with a team before the official start of free agency because he was released. This gives him a bit of a jump on the market.

However, his recent injury history is sure to limit the size of his contract. Oakland could offer him a chance to compete for playing time as well as a spot to get his career back on track. The fact this is a team looking to win should also play into their favor.

Oakland appears to have some competition for his services as Davis has taken visits with the San Francisco 49ers, Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns.

If the Raiders were able to get Davis under contract he would compete for playing time with Sean Smith, Gareon Conley and Dexter McDonald. It wouldn’t be a stretch for Davis to be considered the team’s top cover guy.

However, Oakland’s need for help at cornerback might force them to be more aggressive on the free agent market. Davis has his upside, but the injury history is a major cause for concern. It’s possible the Raiders go after a bigger fish.
