Armani Watts is a prospect who has more upside than he does immediate value. The former Texas A&M Aggies star is undersized, gambles too often in the passing game, and doesn’t always take the best angles when providing run support.
If the Cleveland Browns are willing to gamble on upside at No. 64 overall, however, then Watts could be a prospect who’s worth evaluating and potentially drafting.
For all that can be said about Watts’ fundamentals and size, he’s a defensive playmaker who flies to the ball. He wants to be in on every play imaginable, which results in his spectacular tackle and turnover-forcing numbers from his college career.
Watts finished his senior season with 87 tackles, 10.0 tackles for loss, 0.5 sack, four interceptions, five passes defended, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.
Watts’ primary selling point is his athleticism, as he covers ground as well as a player who’s far bigger than he measures. He’s solid in coverage, can line up in man, is a true ball hawk, and has correctable flaws in terms of his fundamentals.
If the Browns can help Watts bulk up and become a more fundamentally polished tackler, he could facilitate Jabrill Peppers‘ move to strong safety.
