The Florida State Seminoles played home to a free safety who has all of the tools to become an All-Pro level player in the NFL. A knee injury is a red flag on his resume, but Derwin James is one of the best talents in this draft class.

Some might argue that James wouldn’t be worth selecting at No. 4 overall, but if the Cleveland Browns trade back, he should be a top target.

James is a hard-hitting safety who can stand to improve his tackling fundamentals, but will strike fear into the hearts of runners and receivers. That alone makes him a compelling fit at free safety, as his presence could go a long way towards changing the organization’s reputation.

Standing at 6’3″ and 215 pounds, James has sub 4.5 speed, high-level strength for his position, and the explosiveness to go up and make plays on the ball.

As is the case with every prospect, the ideal scenario would see James translate his versatility from the college game to the NFL. That would include his reliability in coverage as a player who can line up in man against receivers or match up against tight ends.

James has a chance to emerge as one of the very best players in this draft class, regardless of position. Cleveland should give him serious consideration.
